Rich Dunlap #3 - 36 Panel Layout

This picture shows the neatest thing about our layout. Gene and I bought Lionel giraffe cars that were not in excellent condition, painted some in Flyer colors, and changed them to Flyer trucks. Gene then used pieces of Flyer curved rail to make trips to activate the mechanism on the giraffe cars that make their heads duck down. These trips are on three of the four outer curved panels that have the tunnels in place. As the train cars move, the giraffes duck down just in time to clear the tunnel opening and then pop back up just as they clear the other side of the tunnel. It is fun to watch families view the layout and see who notices the giraffes movement first.....the kids or the parents. Either way it always gets a fun reaction. A Flyer caboose looks a little small in relation to the giraffe cars, so again we took the liberty to put Flyer trucks on a Marx caboose that is more in scale with the giraffe cars. To add to the string of giraffe cars we also added a couple of the Lionel horse cars with moving heads. Well, that's about it. We have displayed our layout four times and it always gets great comments.   To give credit where it is due, my friend Gene Linder was the mastermind behind the giraffe car setup. We co-own this layout and have great fun with it.
